Applying Extended Reality to Food Safety: Mixed Reality

Last month we discussed some potential uses for augmented reality (AR) in the food safety industry. This month, we will introduce you to another type of extended reality known as mixed reality (MR). This type of reality is often defined as an enhanced AR. In MR environments, the line between the virtual and the real world is blurred. Virtual objects have the ability to interact with the physical environment in several ways. For instance, users can draw virtual images or words on physical walls, or place virtual objects on physical tables around their real environment. This enhances the user’s experiences and offers several more applications than standard augmented reality devices.

Next month, we will discuss ways in which MR can be used in food safety training, as well as potential uses by food safety professionals on the job.
