Reconstructing Learning Experiences

Part 3

Live Remote Instructor-Led Training (LRILT)

Last month we looked at how virtual instructor led (vILT) allows instructors/facilitators and learners to connect and interact via web-based conferencing systems, without needing to travel. In vILT, the instructors and participants are usually all at separate locations, which limits hands-on activities and face-to-face interactions.

Live remote instructor led training (LRILT) allows for a group of training participants to gather in a location (say, another country) with an onsite facilitator, to have more hands-on and in-person experiences; however, the instructors are at remote locations. This modality allows for a regional gathering, or multiple regional sites, while reducing travel costs for experts from various locations, allowing greater flexibility and access to subject matter experts.

The purpose of this strategy is to focus on enhancing understanding through joint onsite exercises, while accessing subject matter experts and reducing travel constraints.

During LRILT, emphasis should be placed on application through hands-on exercises and peer-to-peer and participant-to-instructor discussions.

Next month, we will discuss rethinking how in-person instructor led training can be used to take full advantage of in-person training time.
