Reconstructing Learning Experiences
Part 6
Field-Based Competency Assessment
As we have explored how we can restructure training by reducing the amount of in-person training, focusing on experiential hands-on exercises, and expanding access to training while reducing travel costs, an essential part of the training system is to assess an individual’s competencies in their workplace.
Assessing an individual's knowledge, skills, and abilities within their workplace is crucial to ensuring competence and proficiency in their field. Field-based competency assessment plays a pivotal role in the evaluation of an individual's capabilities by a standardized assessor, utilizing competency statements that are part of the Integrated Food Safety System (IFSS) National Curriculum Standard (NCS).
The standardized assessor uses competency statements and behavioral anchors (evidence of competency) to gauge the individual's expertise and practical skills. This approach establishes a uniform standard for evaluation, as well as ensures that professionals are adept in essential aspects of their field. Ultimately, field-based competency assessment not only enhances the credibility of the workforce but also contributes to the overall safety and quality of the food system.
Incorporating the NCS competency statements into the assessment process adds an extra layer of rigor. This national framework ensures that relevant areas are thoroughly covered. Moreover, the use of standardized assessors guarantees an objective and consistent appraisal of each individual, irrespective of the assessor's background. As a result, this method cultivates a workforce that excels in their roles, upholds stringent food safety standards, and collectively contributes to the integrity of the industry.
Next month we will explore how the use of competency-based assessment can be used to develop individualized learning paths that focus on the knowledge, skills, and abilities where the individual needs additional training, or remediation.
