Reconstructing Learning Experiences

Part 5

Field-Based Training

Over the past few months, we have discussed how current learning delivery modalities allow us to rethink and restructure training. We have the technologies that allow us to provide instant access to information across the globe, and to provide access to interactive 3D images and learning assets that allow individualized learning experiences with products or environments without the need for travel or access to facilities with limited availability. We also have the ability to allow learners to participate in real-time discussions and exercises via video conferencing systems.

However, perhaps the most important part of training is experiential learning: real-world experiences purposefully designed and guided by a mentor. Such experiences should be aligned with the competencies in the knowledge base to ensure that learners have exposure to experiences that allow them to apply their knowledge and understanding.

Next month, we will discuss how a field, or workplace, training system can be used to assess an individual’s competencies.
